I've said this before and I think it merits repeating, if you want weight carry a scale! Unless you've got some willing friends standing next to you, your not getting length and girth from a large striper without doing it some damage by laying it down on the sand, rocks or even boat deck.
My 50# digital Berkely, I can take out of my pocket, turn on and set up to weigh a fish with one hand, leaving the other hand free to control and protect the resource. You lay a fish down on the sand (or any surface) while you get your tape out, measure length and then girth, that fish is loosing the protective slime coating and will be more apt to suffer from delayed mortality.
Do the fish a favor, buy a scale.
