It is scary... four people drowned on Lake Michigan too. You wonder how much alcohol is involved to have so many incidents over the weekend.
I was out at Smith Point a couple years ago and guy was throwing a toy out for his dog while his toddler, maybe 3 years old, played about 20 yards away in the water. This was just to the right side of the rip on the dropping tide. I'm sure you know how strong the current is there...
Anyway, the dog is getting swept towards the rip each throw and barely getting back, the kid doesn't have a pfd and it was scaring me. I was kinda half-@ssed tossing a bluefish plug into the rip and watching them. Finally the dog is getting tired and gets swept towards me... luckily, I was able to take a couple steps out and grab its collar. The guy comes running down and is now about 40 yards away from his kid.
I freakin' lost it and just screamed at him to stay there and watch his kid, and that I'd bring the dog up to him. I don't understand the mentality. Just put a little thought into what's going on
