Those power strips that are $6 from Home Depot are useless. For any kind of high-value electronics, you should have them plugged into a UPS or, minimally a quality Surge Strip. We've been programed to protect our computers, but now we need to start plugging our LED/LCD tvs and all components that connect to the tv into quality Surge Strips as well.
Raven, with regards to your computer, sometimes it's only the power module that gets fried. If you have a friend with a spare, I'd suggest asking them to swap out the power supply and see if that works. Then you can buy a replacement power supply as opposed to having to buy a whole new machine.
