It sounds to me like you lost the Neutral from the street but still have the 2 hot legs (at 120 volts each). Anyway, you can install a whole house surge protector in your main panel, but it DOESN'T protect against lightning. the thing that bugs me is even with the whole house surge their warranty states you still HAVE to have a backup surge strip on the individual tv's and appliances.

What JohnnyD said is true also, those cheap surge strips are garbage! Its crazy to pay more than $1000+ for a tv and blu ray etc... then buy some crap strip made in Korea.
The other thing is a lot of people don't realize the difference between a "surge" strip and a "power" strip. A power strip is just giving you 6 open places to plug in with NO protection. It needs to be a surge suppressor

Honestly, in the end you were probably screwed from the start, a lost neutral isn't something that you can be "pretected" from. Surge suppressors aren't designed that way
