For $3500 you should be able to score something like a 92-95 Cherokee. Get the straight 6 only. Small Cherokee, not the Grand.
Second John also on about a 10 year old Bronco. Or a K-5 Blazer with the 350 V-8.
Early to mid-90s F-150, another good choice. The 4.9 liter straight 6 or either V-8.
Stay away from S-10 Blazers and pre-95 Explorers.
