You can also go to messenger > tools > options > preferences > deselect run when Windows starts up and run in the back ground. Also in Outlook > tools > options > general - deselct messenger from starting when Outlook starts...
For those of you that have little or no idea on how to rebuild a computer, you might want to not make changes to what services start ( and certainly changes to the registry) or not to start. Some services may seem OK to turn off because they seem unimportant then your computer might not boot the next time
