All depends on where you are fishing and with what tackle. I completely agree with the bomber style lure - very easy to use, can be purchased anywhere, and work in many different places. I would also add Tsunami / Storm swim shads for the same reasons. I also like sluggos or similar type baits rigged either on lead heads or just with plain hooks. Lastly buy a some type of a metal spoon, either a Kastmaster, Hopkins, or better yet a Pt Jude. That will be for when you need to cast far and also for when the blues are around.

Not to steer you away from wood or anything like like and AH puts out some sweet stuff (in fact I just bought a herring colored pencil I can't wait to throw) and his needlefish are the first out of my bag but the above won't break the bank and can be used almost anywhere by any skill level.

I think the best advice is to look for a reputable tackle shop in the area, go there and ask your question. Say you don't want to spend a ton and mention where you plan on fishing. Good luck!
