He may only have six or gotton some special deal on his two stroke...he said he could not pass it up and it was a no brainer given the cheaper price and the extended warenty... Still 6 years...in 6 years you will want a new motor anyway!
John, IMO thats about what they are really worth! Actually, they run OK. Have had some pricy electrical issues with one of them and they both leak some semi-spent oil when you tilt them up which is a little messy...But it has not stopped me from using them all season. I've run them pretty hard.
I have owned a johnson/evinrude engine since I was 12 and by dad before that going back to the early 50's and I have to say, I don't see me buying another. The problem is company support. When they "no longer make and can't get" a new part for a 3 yo motor there is a problem there. EMM (the computer) can not be replaced, it can only be re-built by a 3rd party company. As I understand it, when Bomberdier bought OMC, the guys in the EMM group spun themselves off and became their own company called DFI. If you have a problem with an EMM you deal with them... Bomberdier actually has their phone number for this thing in their parts list.
Further the OMC dealers are getting fed up with the whole operation. It looks like the end of the road for them someday if they keep this up. Seems impossible given their world domination of the market years ago. I prefer to buy american...I hate to buy Jap but 6 year warrenty with a competitive price...that is all I really need on an ob.
