I think kayaks are built a little differently and have a different center of gravity with someone in them. Sitting up on those seats in one of those little boats likely makes them a little top heavy. Sea kayaks are designed to handle waves.

You could probably get away with it fishing in some of the rivers, but I'd advise against going anywhere without wake restrictions. I've been out in the harbor in really snotty stuff and the chop from boat wakes on a busy day is as bad or worse than 20knot winds.

Not trying to preach, but its not worth getting dumped and losing your gear or much worse.
