Incredible, I had almost the same exact conversation about this with some co-workers at lunch. Basically, I ended up saying that there are a whole bunch of stupid people in the world(the ones who wanted to kill the shark), then asking if that made me arrogant for thinking that. I just cannot fathom why people would want to kill that shark, or how they could justify it.
On the "people being stupid" angle, it brings to mind one of my favorite all time quotes:
"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." -P.T. Barnum
I just love that one.
