There is a trait in all of nature that promotes the survival and expansion of the species. It very well may be that the adult pogies swim in there own group to better protect themselves from predators that the peanuts would attract. You can also expand this to say that the adult pogies are best to protect their young if they don't swim separate.
As an aside man has not evolved ethically but only find better ways to do eash other in including nature.
