NECN report:

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) — A proposal to put tolls on the new Sakonnet River bridge between Portsmouth and Tiverton got a frigid reception as several hundred people packed a public meeting to oppose the plan.

Toll opponents turned out in force Monday night at an informational forum held by state officials at Portsmouth High School. Opponents say they've gathered more than 27,000 signatures against the tolls.

Officials with the Turnpike and Bridge Authority haven't said how much the tolls would be, but say they're needed for maintenance. Tolls on the Pell Bridge between Newport and Jamestown are $4 cash or 83 cents for state residents with E-ZPass.

Opponents insist the toll is unfair and would hurt small business owners.

Another hearing on the tolls is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Tiverton High School.

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.
