It is easier to through drill. Getting screw eyes exactly on line (not tilted a bit) is harder than it sounds. You also lose any ability to tweak the line tie to adjust for depth or side to side action. If you use large screw eyes trying to get split rings over them without springing the ring is near impossible. Hooks tear out easier when pinned by a fixed attachment point.

I used them a fair amount early on an regretted it. If you want to go that route I'd suggest making your own out of TIG wire so you can bend them. Just twist it in a drill, drill a small hole and epoxy it in. Works better than the screw in kinds. Or use sinker eyes and Frech's method of epoxying them into 1/4" holes. It is very strong as long as you have not sealed the plug before you do it.
