The Rangers down there are more than likely Temporary Employees, not Permanent. With the Sequestration and the Furloughs coming down, the Temp Employees are the 1st to go before the furloughs will kick in. Pentagon just layed off 46,000 Temps.
So there probably won't be any rangers available to monitor the area. Not sure if the people manning up the visitors center are Temporary employees too....but if they are they will be let go as well.
So take that info for what its worth....but it is realistic that the only thing they will have is gates
