Greg sorry to hear that, but like Ross pointed out get a second opinion.

My 8 year lab mix did the same thing back in october, he was chasing ducks thru a muddy field and went down hard, and just got up and sat there.

I took him to the vet and they said torn acl, they suggested light rest and see how it goes, some pills for the pain and swelling, surgery was the last option, it was a pretty bad tear.

I took him to another vet for a second opinion and they said the same thing, rest and see basically.

After a couple months of light walks and rest, hes fine now, it did take about 3 to 4 months for a full recovery as he always wants to run and play with our other dog.

do what you feel is best, your dog is young so he should bounce back if its a not a bad tear and make a full recovery.
