A lot of the "older" actors are turning to the small screen as a way of precuring a constant paycheck. Instead of waiting for that 20 million payday for one movie, they opt for a "regular" paycheck.

Back in the glory days of hollywood there was a question of who was the actor in hollywood (I believe it was around the 50's-70's) that had made the most money during his career.
Everyone was naming big stars, and were wrong. It turned out that the wealthiest actor of THAT timeframe was Fred McMurray. He had only a few leading roles in Disney movies, but he had plenty of supporting roles in many, many films. The fact was that he was ALWAYS working, and thus, he was always making money.

Some of the actors these days are willing to take roles that aren't starring roles, or aren't glamorous, but they are always working.
Johnny Depp is one that comes to mind. Don Cheadle is another.
