Back in the days before Al Gore invented the internet, retailers books were kept with pen and paper. Many operated for much of the year at a loss (allegedly), and the books were marked in red ink indicating a loss. Black ink indicated profit. Black Friday was a concept that would start on the Friday after Thanksgiving that would hopefully put the retailers in the black (profit) during the Christmas season.
This also escalated the "commercialization" of Christmas in my opinion.
