First off, the only ticks you have to be worried about regarding lyme disease are deer ticks.

I think the woman was confusing a couple situations. There are two ways that a doctor can treat you for Lyme and it depends on when you were bit and for how long the tick was chowing down.

A doctor could give you a single 200mg prophylactic dose of doxycyclene if you've removed a deer tick off yourself within the last 72-hrs or so. Some doctors will do this, others won't. I had a deer tick on my inner thigh and my doctor gave me the one time dose. Doxycyclene usually makes you feel like crap. I'm guessing this is what she was referring to.

The other option is waiting for the tell-tale bulls eye rash (which doesn't always show or isn't always visible) or other symptoms of Lyme and then it's a couple weeks of doxycyclene. Once you show the rash, you're stuck with this option.
