in the canal, ure better off using an atom plug for a plastic. they make several models such as their swimmer, popper, and others. however, for the canal i would say get some nice wood plugs. darters, pencils, danny swimmers, poppers, and many more. the wood tends to get out a little further than the plastic stuff just cause its ussualy more dense. hope this helps. the color thing is a whole nother story. ussually lighter colors in the day and darker at night. make up any combo u want
