short nose sturgeon are protected... IF you hook one it must be released without taking them from the water... I didn't catch any (which I am grateful for).. they just jumped all around the boat... including the one that hit the boat...... occasionally people hook them on cut bait... most times they get snagged/foul hooked...My biggest fear as I headed in was one landing IN the boat...many,many years ago I while returning home across the flats in a tin boat I ran through a pod of small bass on the flats... they exploded out of the water and one of them hit me in the chest.. knocking the wind out of me...if a 5' 200lb sturgeon did that I wouldn't be typing on line tight now...

A good run is better than a bad stand!
