Mike. When the weather breaks, head to Billington Sea Kayak in Plymouth. They have quite a selection of different manufacturers and they're right on the lake there so you can try several out. The trial part is probably one of the most important aspects. I have a 15' Ocean Kayak Prowler Trident and like it a lot. I let anyone that wants try mine out and the offer is extended to you as well.
You'll need to set a budget and figure what fits your needs for your price range. A big part of the expense comes when you start rigging them with all the extras. But the beauty is you can go as bare bones as you like or outfit it with everything but the kitchen sink. That can range from @ $600 to $4k or more.
