Thanks guys.....I haven't weighted it but it feels alittle on the heavy side for a gaff. You could also go with 7/8'' aluminum pipe which is a little lighter then a glass rod or wood.

Certain areas require an even longer gaff. Last year, after learning the hardway, I made a 18' gaff. : Guys who fish RI rocky shores know how turbulent and rough them waters can often be. Not only will a gaff of that length help you land BIG fish but more importantly, will not have you take unnecessary risks.

This 18' gaff (two piece telescopic) consists on two poles( 7/8"x9' and 11/2''x9'). I predrill two holes on the end held with nuts and bolts. I also build up one end with duct tape so theres less play. The hook is held with tw s/s pipe clamps. At 9' it fits in the van nice.

Most guys will never have the need for a 18' gaff but theres always those few hot spots that most guys won't even think about trying. Put your gaff together before you cast.
