3.14 * d is the formula for the circumference, not the area. For the volume, you need to take the area, which is 3.14 * r^2. r = 6.5 feet or 78 inches in this case:

3.14 * 78^2 = 19,104 square inches

Then take the area and multiply it by the height (3 feet or 36 inches) to find the volume:

19,104 * 36 = 687,735 cubic inches

When you do this and then convert from cubic feet (or inches) to gallons, you get roughly 2977 gallons:

1 cubic inch = .00432900433 gallons

687,735 cubic inches * .00432900433 = 2977 gallons

That is the volume in a perfect world. You would have to deal with the sides caving in and other variables when totally full, so the realistic volume is a little less than 2977 gallons.
