The ease of access to crazy: The Internet.
Before the Internet, most of the crazy were small fish in a big pond had some push pull from, ya know NORMAL society, to curb some of the extreme tendencies and tinfoilhat stuff.
The Internet, however, allowed whack jobs on both sides to silo into their own cess pools of crazy (see Alex Jones and Occupy Democrats) and when they found these conglomerations of nuttiness, they socialized less with more normal folk that could attenuate their crazy.
Now that they have found their crazy, the crazy biug fish in these small ponds (road puddles seemingly)of crazy tried to "one up" each other in a race of who could manifesto over whom further fueling the fire making the nuttiness go from ludicrous speed straight to plaid.
