Black Cherry trees tend to be more susceptible to pest and disease problems that can ultimately kill the tree if left untreated. They're naturally a pioneer species, meaning that they tend to take over new ground first due to the great amount of fruit/seed production. tent catepillars, wood boring insects, even aphids are among the insect species that favor this tree and other rose family trees. and disease includes leaf spot and trunk canker... another reason could be a change in drainage near the tree... preferring well drained areas. The tree can tolerate relatively dry , poor soils with reduced growth rates. Meaning it's probably some kind of pest, if firewood from another site was brought in it could be from that.
A dogwood tree (also deciduous) makes a good privacy tree and is nice to look at while in bloom, but is very slow growing and would need undergrowth removed to help it grow. If you prefer year round privacy and do not have a ton of deer coming through your property cedars are nice.
