It all depends on where you are fishing, what structure you have, how deep etc.

when you set it with a scale be sure the rod is bent.

once you do that to where you need it, you'll get used to how much that is by a pull with your hand right off the reel. I always loosen the drag a little just before landing a large bass in the canal, so then before next cast I set it back again.

30 lb mono can handle 8 pounds of drag fine
