Were they away when it happened?

I try and keep mine running every winter which is difficult with ice dams. As long as you have oxygen exchange through a floating heater or air stone water circulation shouldn't matter as long as it's not crowded with fish.

Just curious, I've never lost a fish to freeze and my pond isn't even very deep.
