Are any of you Computer Services sellers / especially with Citrix?
I'm looking to get an Eval version of Citrix Metaframe for study / evaluation... I have plenty of TS experience but want to brush up on Citrix...
Thanks,
John

After reading this site for about a month now I'm starting to detect a slight Mood Disorder. You know they have medication for that...Anyways it could be worse it could be Winframe.

It's all in the implementation I suppose. Ours runs real slow and crashes a lot - but I've been told this is due to the relatively few servers we use (we need more but we are under budget constraints).

Just like with any S/W package it has its good and its bad. We use it for great Plains and it works great. But as far as them improving the printer situation it still is a pain in the ass.

Yeah, funny you should mention the printing situation.
One of the things I absolutely hate about Metaframe is the mandatory print notification (a little dialog box opens up when you finish a print job). If you're printing a lot, it's a hassle to close these boxes. I'm told you can't cancel this feature.
Also, there seems to be a conflict with Windows (no surprise) when it comes to saving files. If you are in Metaframe and you are saving under an application (Word, etc), your local floppy gets accessed FIRST (grind...grind....) before allowing you to save to the volume you want to.
Little things like this waste an enormous amount of time.

Which version of Metaframe are you using? I remember disabling the printer notification. If you give me the version I'll see if I can at least help you w/ that one

WeeWee - from my experience with Terminal Server (which is like Evil Empire Citrix Lite) you should be able to change in your romote profile the apps default autosave location. This should make the autosave take place locally within the profile or at least in the network resource you worked from in the first place...
Again, with "Citrix Lite" they will bog down with too many sessions on too little resources but thats not the software's fault. I remember having a few 3D Engnineering Apps running in several sessions slowly spiral to a near server death experience but we knew we were beating the shoot out of it... On the other hand, worked great with remote users accessing most everything else...

Computer Stuff
Have I got a deal for you! I had to get out of this biz a while back, just plain burned out and couldn't take it anymore. But I just unearthed some Cisco Router Configuration self paced training packages I bought for training our folk. Probably about 5 years old. Want a real deal? I have programming books for COBOL, RPG II and 360/370 Assembler, and OS/JCL. Vintage stuff. All Free! Makes me feel like a fossil to admit this, but I have entire programs of punch cards I typed myself, fully compiled and ready for your immediate use. Also a copy of the Computer Professional's Survival Guide (which didn't work for me).

Since your a cisco PIX guy why the interest in a software based firewall solution. I would much rather use a H/W based solution. Although I know the PIX is pricey. If your looking for lower cost take a look at the 3Com Superstack/OfficeConnect Firewall. They're a Nice product for relatively short money $12-1300 right out of the box) and they support VPN connectivity if your trying to link remote sites.

Knowledge laddy, knowledge... Actually 2 reasons. One I want to learn it a bit from a geek perspective. I find it challenging connecting various IPSEC based solutions (as far as I know I was the first or one of the first to ever SUCCESSFULLY link up Cisco PIX and the Linksys VP41 in site to site 3DES) but some of the jobs I'm applying for are looking for different skill sets. For example, one place is running Firewall-1 but I have a lot of experience with Cisco PIX and Novell Bordermanager 2/3. One place wants Sonicwall, another Nortel. A couple places are looking for Citrix where I have experience in rollouts of MS Terminal Server (painfully easy even after the backa$$wards licensing problems).
Right now I'm also going over W2K3, Exchange03, Websphere, Netware6.5, Lotus Domino, some Linux based stuff... Never ends
Had a preliminary interview this morning that wanted Citrix and would like some SAN expereince (which I want to learn anyway)...
