Heavers

What about the long 12' rods, any of you use them?
I've got five surf rods in the nine to ten foot range. These seem to be fine for what I do. I like a ten footer. Bass up tight. But there're spots where I live, boulders and shelves, a good hundred yards offshore, where a well placed chunk on the back-side, could be glorious. It'd be a hell of a toss though. Ah the things I dream about while walking the dogs.

Just bought an 11' Seeker, its a fiberglass rod made by a friend of mine. I plan on "heaving" chunks and sandeels at the Race. Sometimes you just need that extra somethin'! Know what I mean?

I am 6'5"tall almost 300 lbs., and I think a 12' rod, at least for me, would be overkill.....don't know how a smaller guy could use one but they do.

By the way, how you doin' Goosefish?

last fall a fishing friend of mine who is in his late 70's gave me a 11' honey lamiglass that is too big for him to use anymore... I've lovingly named it "the meat chucker" and plan to put it to use this summer when the water warms up. I've got a few places where I know it would be just the ticket-

Me and Mikey got the 12' Okumas. I used to fish an old fenglass 12' that was great for plugs, but too soft for bait on the bottom.
Close second was an 11' Penn Slammer.
Mikey seems to love his Okuma, I've never used mine. Only place we break them out is at Race Point.
Might be overkill, might not.
However, when the current and wind are ripping and you need 6 oz of lead to hold bottom, they seem to do the trick.
Later,
Rick

Yup, I love mine. Usually only break her out when I'm doing the bait and wait. But, I'll tell ya, that thing combined with a spool of braid equals very long casts. Sometimes it feels a little silly reeling in twink that set up though.

A really nice rod for that in theis area where you only need 4 to 5 OZ of lead plus the chunk is the Allstar 11' 9". Casts great and a good rod once the fish are on. For places that require 8 to hold the bottom , you need the more powerful true heavers. Anyway , if you want something good for that kind of fishing in this area , look at a rod built on the Allstar 1418/2. I once measured a cast using about 5 OZ total at 163 yards with that rod and a Mag Elite reel.

WHAT SALTHEART SAID. Allstar LDFC 11'9 is the bomb. If you want to spend a little more, the Outcast 1625 ain't too shabby either.

Yeah the 1418 looks nice. 3-5 plus bait---will throw eight in a pinch they say. Lighter duty heaver. Will take a 7000 class reel or a 525 or 6500. Going to have to wait a full season on this one............................................... maybe I'II grab one up in the fall Rainshadow has taken over Allstar, but I hear nothing really is going to change with the blanks, because the guy who is leaving Allstar is going to rainshadow and is bringing the mandrels with him. Or something like this.
