Reading Tide & Wind

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before, somewhere, but I can't find it so.....

What are some basic rules on how wind and tide effect the bite?

For example, to me it would make sense to fish the mouth of a river/breachway on the outgoing tide, but I don't know if that is factual.

For wind I would think that a south east facing cove would be fished best in a wind out of the southeast, but again, total speculation.

I don't seem to have nearly as much luck as most on this board, and I am just trying to figure what i'm doing wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated.

onshore blow/breeze is always nice-
outgoing tide at a breachway is nice-
put them both together and you got a nice rip with some whitewater-faaantastic

outgoing tide=fish outside the breachway
incoming tide=fish the inside

Zac's, you always want the wind blowing at you in some direction even if it is coming at you a little from the side. But when the wind is at your back, it will push the bait and the fish out from you.

Most places I fish I perfer the outgoing tide especially from shore.
When the water temps are cool I fish the last 3 hours of the outgoing. when the weather gets warmer, 1 hour before high to almost dead low. Or when it get really hot i like to fish the nights at 3 hours before low on the drop and 3 hours of the incoming.

But I always keep the wind in my face or find a spot that will make that happen even if it might be around the bend and down the beach a mile!!!

Tonight was a perfect example of how wind can help.Where I fished this evening the wind was BLOWING out of the NE hitting the shore at the 10 o'clock position.High tide in my area was around 4:30 so the tide was still outgoing.The bass were feeding heavy within just a few feet of shore because the bait was being pushed there.I caught around a dozen 15"-20" schoolies between 8:15-8:45.


And yes I used a Kastmaster again!

I fish mainly in RI from East Greenwich to Matunuck. Also a little in SE MA from Matapoisett to Dartmouth.

I mostly from shore although I have a friend with a nice boat and we fish buzzards bay and the islands occasionally.

I went tonight up here in the west bay and caught a few, 2 small ones and a decent one.

All advice is extremely welcome!!!!

from my experience, if you are fishing the upper bay the flood tides are best-2 to 3 hours before the top of the tide

Hi Zac. There are many things that affect the bite but some rules remain relatively simple.

1st Stucture: This isn't only rocks and depth, but also action of the water. example 2 opposing currents like an outlet.

wind/bait. The guys covered that good already you want bait being pushed toward or by you.

I'm sure if you keep reading this board you'll get great information on Tides etc.
