Kayak fishing - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

I know that King Cove's tournement is coming up soon.

But I was wondering if anyone knows of any Kayak fishing seminars?

I tried paddling around in a 'yak for the first time this weekend. A certain chain store had a free trial day in Hingham over the weekend.

I absolutely loved every minute of it, even when I dumped it and went for a swim.

Before I run out and spend the money for a 'yak, paddles, PFDs, etc., etc., etc., I would love to go to a seminar and get some recommendations. Find out what other people are using, and rigging their boats.

It will be some time before I travel into rocky coves or anywhere too far from a beach I can swim too, but I am hoping it won't be long before I am in a YAK!!!

i know it is a bit of a drive, but CCA-CT is having a seminar just north of Hartford, CT tomorrow evening. NilsC will be speaking on how to fish for bluefish, stipers, weakfish, etc... from a kayak. it is open to the public and it is free. if you would consider making the drive, i can get and post directions for you.

Depending on the time....not sure if I can make it.

If it is after 8pm and I can get out of work by 5 I can probably make even with traffic.

Can't promise I can make it, but I will be making an effort.

My girlfriend said I looked like a kid on Christmas, couldn't wipe the smile off my face while I was tooling around in the kayaks. I am really excited.

Lemme know time and directions.

the meeting is at 7pm at Albert's restaurant in Windsor locks, CT. you should be able to get to I-91 from where you live. once on I-91, take exit 42 and take a right off the exit. continue up the hill to S. main street and take a left onto it. Albert's restaurant is maybe 1 mile on your left.

If I am out of work by 4:30, and I got in a 6 so I could get out early today, I will see you guys. If not I will be pissed off and kicking dust heading for the beach to throw some plug for a few hours at dark.

I look forward to becoming part of the elite few who 'yak fish.

I hope you guys do not mind a bunch of questions while I buy and ramp up.

here are a litle better directions. it is actually in Windsor, not Windsor Locks. sorry about that.

1526 or 1530 Palisado Ave, Windsor, CT

From the north
Take the CT-159 exit towards WINDSOR LOCKS, exit #42 - go 0.3 mi. Turn right on S MAIN ST - go 0.9 mi Take left PALISADO AVE, go approx. 1.5 Alberts restaurant

From south
Take the WINDSOR LOCKS(CT-159) exit, exit #42 - go 0.2 mi. At end of exit take left take first right go app 1.5 miles Alberts restaurant

you an tell who has confidence in their 'yak abilities.

I plan to teather one rod to my yak with virtually no tackle on board. And I still afraid a schoolie will make me tip over and drag me 1/2 way to england. LOL

After I get some lessons and practice, I hope I can build my confidence. Although I got to break down and buy the yak first.

Right now I am thinking a Pungo 120 or 140.

If you get a pungo, get the 140. Then add a bilge pump and a sealed battry to pump out the kayak while you fight the fish. (You don't have time to pump while the Nantucket sleigh ride is going on) This will make it a little safer to use offshore.

absolutely - I cannot wait to hook up.

I am comfortable with the pungo - but when I come down - I will have to try a SOT and see what I think. Maybe you can sway me the other direction.

I am too much of a novice to know the benefits of SOT vs recreational. Have to see you in action. Talk to you about the differences and make a more informed decision before dropping the bucks on something I am not going to be happy with. Glad I didn't impulse buy. Besides I would rather see King Cove get my business rather than that chain store. Unless I get some unbelievable deal somewhere else.

The sleigh ride actually has me a little nervous, and a lot more excited. what is the longest ride you have had - in distance and time?

As far as work goes, I have been in the office since mid-night with like 2 hours sleep. I am punchy and pissed off. I have no patients for any of my co-workers at this point.

Good new - go home, get a couple hours of sleep. And hit the beach and see if I can't get into a couple of fish.
