Smokey and I ran into Mr KAV on Friday night at he Ditch. He was with a very enthusiastic roup who were out to conquer The Canal. unfortunately , it was blowing about 35 mph.

Smokey and I had fished a while in two spots and decided we were wasting our time. The wind too much.

So how did you guys make out at Scusset beach?

Wow Friday night at about 9:30 I tried to make it to the ditch too. But the lightning was so bad and almost hit my truck , I turned around at 195 and went back home. Went back Sat. night and got nothing but 1 hit on a jig. Then monday at 2-6 AM got 2 fish

I should have stayed in the car and waited for them they wouldn't have been long. your right i was with an extrememly enthusiastic group who rarely gets a chance to fish never mind fishing the canal. we went over to where you suggested and i threw out a chunk bait and about 10 minutes later the sky opened up and we were all drenched. so we walked back to the cars and ended up in Quintels. I want to thank smokey and yourself for the advise that you gave us. as you could see that we are really not the best shore fisherman. That was my third time fishing like that from the land but it is always fun to try new things.

You just hit a bad , very bad night Mr Kav. When we hit the heavy stuff on the ride home , Smokey and I were thinking you guys would get soaked.

We usually go and fish a long time. Even when getting skunked we put in our time. We even stayed the night I broke my finger. I can't think of 3 times in the last 4 years we just up and went home cause it was unfishable. Friday night was like that. Just bad luck.

On the flip side , after all the lightning and rain , there were fish to be had Sat AM. JPowers got a nice fish Sat AM. Just bad luck if you were there Friday night. You should reassemble your crew for about Sept 15. By that time , you are just about garanteed fish in the Ditch. Of course , that doesn't mean you won't run into a full gale or thunder and lightning.

thanks for the advise, i have a 2 day tournament up here the weekend before the september 15 i just hope you guys aren't hording all the bass down there at the canal. Two of the guys that i was with that night are going to be doing that tournament with me and they were all excited to fish the canal, can you imagine what a two day tournment does for them? i noticed that setup that you were using , what was that a 3oz egg weight on that jig? i would have thought that would get hooked up in the rocky bottom of the canal. are you actually hitting the bottom when you throw those in the canal or just reeling fast so it does get snagged?

That was a 3 OZ ball jig. It had a 7 inch fin S fish on it. Jigging the canal can get complicated. There are different things at different spots. The jigs behave differently depending on the style and if you use a tail or fully tied bucktail or if the tail has little drag like a pork strip or a lot of drag like a shad body. A 3 OZ ball is pretty versatile for the canal.

Yes , you lose jigs. You can fish a long time without losing one but unless you are bouncing the bottom you aren't into the best fishing area. If you are bouncing the bottom , you are going to lose some.

3 oz. ball jigs pull up a verity of stuff off the bottom of the ditch like chawgies hooked in butt, lobsters, and other jigs. Beside all the crap they catch the occasonal stripebass. When your fishing them right you may only get one cast and be hung up on the bottom. this is called a one way jig. It's a challenge to land a big fish in the ditch, that's why we keep going back.
