Fishers Island

Um, I am going to F.I. Sept. 19-25th.

I get the feeling that it might be a half way decent place to fish

Anyone have any info they feel like sharing ?

I have passed through the Race a lot of times over the years and always marveled at Fisher's proximity to the Race.

I get the feeling that night time on the South shore won't be too bad.

I am going there for a sailing race. The IOD Worlds. Will have nights and a couple of afternoons off.

When I lived in CT and RI I made a point to visit fishersisland a few times each season..usually by bike with the family and once or twice to fish alone on a commando trip.

The main problem with Fishers is access. the east half is quite private and it is not that easy to get around. That said, I have managed to fish it several times from the beach. The simplest place is to access the beach near the airstrip and walk toward the race. This is pretty produtive waters and I have done well here each time.

As far as the rest of the place...work the south side if you can ...both points. ...like I said gettin to these places can be quite difficult...but with your nantucket connections I am sure you will be rubbing elbows with the elite that can get you in.

While your there see if you can pick up the fisher's Island golf club shirt...I think it is purple and pink with a embroided emblem in the shirt...very ugly but it is "quite" the status symbol.

Jeez,

Thanks Jim. we will hopefully be allowed to bring our working class asses out on the golf course there but I doubt it. We qualified for the regatta by winning our fleet championship here. Even the nantucket Yacht Club guys Hate us for it.

Oh well. It is amazing how rude both classes of people can be.

Thanks for the info. I am bringing my truck with me and I hope to get out on the shore.

Let's talk more about it. I have never been there.

It's not "that" much of an island....You can drive around on the few roads but it's a tiny place...no beach driving is needed...bring waders and a small surf bag

Alot of the "working class" end of the island is basically WWII officer housing. There are some cool bunkers to climb around out there too..most of which is very overgrown.

The movie "Garp" (Robin Williams, was filmed out ther when I was around that summer..you may want to check it out.

Fish there every fall. Usually the last trips of the year for me but we do it by boat. Fisher's is like the Elizabeths with houses. I like the east end to mid island best. There is a spot westward of the castle on the east end that is a ring of reef and rock with a rockpile at it's center that is always a good spot. Fishing access from shore will be tough. If you can get onto the beach at the Surf Club and walk to the right side there is good fishing as the beach changes from sand to rocky structure again. Our success has always been on the out or backside of the island not the inland side. Danny plugs rule here, white, yellow and Blue/silver. White 2 oz. Pencils work great as well. EEls of course and needles might work as well. The fishing really picks up ( in a normal year) from Columbus Day to just after Thanksgiving. At the west end by the airstrip can be good. In Albie and Bonito season it can be awesome off of the east end and inside by the Stonington dike and sand bars just west of Napatree Point. Last fall just plain stunk there but then again, so did just about everywhere else.

Why even try.........
