Beginning a sw plugging/fishig library

History and roots mean a lot to me. I like to know where something came from, how it evolved, etc. I like to read about the pioneers and the guys that developed and influenced how and what we fish today. I've got a good start on my saltwater fly fishing library. Got nothing for my plugging and surf fishing library except what I print off this site and some others. And some very dog eared copies of On the Water. What would you all suggest or do you consider classics that would be worth while trying to locate? (including out of print stuff)

one of my favorites that is rarely mentioned is called "striped bass" form the Barnes Sports library. It was printed in 1944 and my great grandfather gave it to my grandfather, who gave it to my father who forgot all about it, but my grandfather stepped up to the plate and gave it to me. Its not the best book but there are some great plug photos, a chapter on flies, a chapter on striper protection, surfcasting and trolling.

Hmmm....I think Clamma has moved on to the next level of Blooofish Hostility...

Anyway, all thread-jacking aside, I think these are good recommendations for a surfcasting library to go through over the winter- unfortunately, some are out of print and may require a little digging through used bookstores. The asterisk indicates books currently out of print -

Just off the top of my head:

Striper - John Cole

The Striped Bass - Nick Karas

Striper Bass Fishing - Woolner and Lyman

On the Run - David DiBenedetto

Reading the Water - Robert Post (Just reprinted)

Twenty Years on the Cape and Striper Surf - Frank Daignault

Saltwater Fishing Is Easy - Jerry Sylvester*

Fishing the Surf - Raymond Camp*

The Shining Tides - Win Brooks*

Fishing the Atlantic* - Kip Farrington or Women Can Fish* by Chisie Farrington

Anything by OHP Rodman, such as The Saltwater Fisherman's Favorite Four* or Striped Bass Fishing*

Saltwater Fishing by Van Campen Heilner*

On my reading list for the winter is 'The Striper Chronicles' , 'Night Tides' by Billy the Greek, 'Fishing the Bait Tail'* by Al Rheinfelder - and 'Fishing With Hemingway' -

That would certainly be a good start - check with S-B site sponsor Joe Lyons at www.surfcasting-rhodeisland.com for some of these current titles - the others are going to take some digging but are well worth the effort!

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

amazon

You can find alot of out of print stuff on Amazon for pretty cheap. I just ordered Woolner and Lyman's book for $12 for a "like new" hardcover.
