I don't know all the details and have not read all the posts but to me judging from those photos, that looks like a botched repair job that fell apart.

Hulls are not assembled like that in 2 halfs. There was gobs of what looks like silicon calking in that slot. 1) there should be no slot 2) that repair must be reglassed, not caulked. If you ask me, that boat was damaged a long time ago, repaired (incorrectly) then it broke down in a sea.

Buried in the detail posts is an explanation that the patch that is visable was done during the recovery of the boat . . .
