Squids

Any chance that squids are coming to Cape Cod yet? No spots please. I want to know if they are in the area.
Need info about their arrival. I'm planning on catching them this friday.
Thanks.

I don't think you'd get a lot of "spots" heat over squid. Look for a marina that has some good artificial light on the water. Might be a bit on the early side still. In May, I've jigged squid at Onset pier and Monument Beach marina. Later on in the late spring, the Sandwich bulkhead at the east end of the Canal, Cape side.

This time last year a non-regular went absolutely crazy and "called me out" that I let someone know that they were running at a particular spot in Newport.I was threatened, called names, even gave me $h!t about being a vet. Don't know what the guys problem was.Sounds like someone who ties one on then gets behind his keyboard and gets an attitude.

Anyhoo I'm gonna go check out a couple of spots this weekend.I'll let y'all know if I see anything.

I drive by Goat Island Causeway in Newport (yeah, go ahead and flame away) and I shake my head.

First of all, if you haven't been there in spring, it's a freakin' third world zoo.

Second, parking is tough. Woe be unto you if you park at the Hyatt and get caught.

Thirdly, the squidding isn't THAT great. The guys who do well there are there all night and bring the Coleman lamps with them for a few of the larger squid. It's hard work.

There are many other places where you can jig up some squid with 1/10th the hassle of that place.

Guess that I gotta keep exploring. I don't plan to drive there anytime now unless the togs are in. Also, I don't know any spot in RI. God forbids me driving around the state amuk because I fall asleep while driving easily. Alright, thanks, dude. I can't afford to get caught for parking illegally.

Hey guys it's best to treat squid spots as places you shouldn't burn. The squid run is very short and a lot of guys depend on it for food and bait for the season. Like FWW said newport is a huge zoo, hundreds and hundreds of people (some driving 3-4 hours or more) many camp out there for days. People talk about it all over the place and now it's not really worth goin there anymore. Treat it as an example of why not too burn spots. Burning striper spots is bad, but think about it guys the squid run only lasts a few short weeks and and doesn't go to far north. The few spots I used to know now are over run and I have no idea where to go any more. Please keep it to PMs guys, now a days knowing where to go is worth more than know when the squid are in thick

The squid boats showed up in Vineyard Sound yesterday. The weir is also up off Wianno, so the squid must have arrived.

I heard a rumor that some have arrived but I have not had time to check it myself.. Last year in early-mid May is when we got them good.

There are a couple bodies of squid that move in, OTW talks about it a bit this month.

YoungMoon74, of course, you are right. All I just want to know about their arrival.

Sandman, that means the bluefish are going to be here soon because of the squid boat?

Was the picture taken recently?

photos were mid may of 04

I think we could have a couple weeks to go yet but it might happen a little sooner this year. It was not as cold as last year and the water is starting to warm up now.

As far as avoiding crowds in the "spots" try this... Head on down without your rod and watch the yahoo's for a half hour or so every other night. When it gets hot and the squid really show up in numbers to spawn...head back down there at 2:00am and most of the yahoos will be gone. (Head there at 8:00pm on a Sat night and you have a mob problem.)

You only need to hit it hard for 2 or 3 week nights and you have enough to last you the season easy. Take a friend to help jig. (take my word for this...it is WELL WORTH a few late nights to get a nice load of squid for the season...this is the prime LOCAL stuff, 1000X better then the box of cleaned and washed calif calamai you pick up in the bait shop or grocery store. (Although, some shops pick up a load directly from the squid boats and package it themselves and this is pretty good but it is pretty pricey.)

Vacume pack and freeze these whole (with ink and slime in there) and they last all season!
