Speaker: Gary Alt, Wildlife Management Consultant

One of America’s most adaptive and controversial animals, the White-Tailed Deer, has been the focus of more research than perhaps any other animal in North America. Research results, however, go largely unknown by the general public, leading to conflicts, misunderstandings and poor management decisions by property owners, communities, and businesses. As a result, entire native ecosystems and the deer themselves suffer.

Recently featured in TIME magazine as an “Innovator,” Gary Alt is a seasoned wildlife biologist noted for his 20 years of unprecedented success in black bear research and management. From 1999 to 2004, Alt was the leader of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Deer Management Section. During this period, Alt was responsible for the largest field studies and sweeping changes in deer management ever undertaken in Pennsylvania. His tenure culminated in dramatic controversy between the Game Commission and hunting groups, ultimately leading to his resignation. Nonetheless, Alt’s focus on ecosystem management, halting forest habitat destruction, and creating sustainable deer populations has not been swayed. As a sought-after consultant and public speaker, Alt continues his valuable work on behalf of forest habitats and their residents.

Alt will discuss the natural history, human conflicts, and management options for white-tailed deer in an educational and entertaining program with appeal to all ages, interests, and levels of training.
