Getting back in the swing

Howdy all, sorta new to this board. Here`s my problem. Been fishing the salt for 40 yrs and spent the last 15 flyfishing soley. It`s been so long since I used my big sticks it`s like starting all over again. Now I`ve got 3 brand new grand kids that I`m gonna have to teach and I don`t think they are gonna take up the fly rod right off the bat. I put together a new outfit for fishing in the boat, a TFO 7`rated for 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz. Matched with a Shimano Sphereos 8000. Looks like a sweet little pkg for schoolie to med bass and I think I can take on the SBFT with it too! The first of a few probably stupid questions is, Reel cap is stated as 160 yds of 20 lb mono, fine for stripers, but for tuna I was thinking of 30# braid. How does this translate to capacity? Am I under gunned?

20# is on the heavy side for bass from a boat. Normally I use no more than 15#, but my drags are set at 5-6# and my knots are vg. FWIW, we caught a bunch of sbft to 25# (Boga) on 12-15# mono. We got them to the boat and back on their way in 10 minutes.

30# braid should work out well for you on that reel. You'll have to fight the bigger fish with the rod butt though.

Best regards,
Roger
