Question looking for clues

i have windows 2000 on my old PC
on my new PC i have windows XP

a friend sends me an attachment
which is an email he wanted to forward
with the file extension .eml which opens
perfectly on the w2k pc but isnt even recognized
by the win xp PC even though i tried using outlook express
to view it on both...

even though both are windows NT (basically) operating systems.
i dont get it... i went into folder options on the xp box and added
the file extension to the list .... with no luck. i'm puzzled.

is there a way to get an older version of OE?
I doubt it would matter but are the file systems the same? NTFS?
If you create a new email file in XP what is the extension?

Arrow yep

both have NTFS

i'm gonna try the newer version of IE to see if that
solves the problem...

and then let it just run email

all OE email is a .eml file i believe.

I may just be "fishing" here, but that .eml extension
is an MS-Outlook or MS-Outlook Express extension. So if you have Outlook/Express on the W2k PC but not the XP PC its not going to open on XP. You'll need to install Outlook or Outlook Express.

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

ususally outlook express is installed by default so unless you manually unistalled it there is a good chance that it is there. Trying to open the file with outlook is a good idea.... do you have a copy raven?

your gonna have to wait a long time for longhorn. however vista is right around the corner and it looks like there will be some potential there

Arrow yeah

i have a copy of windows 2000 office layin around but i was never fond of outlook .....so i just opened it in note pad even though i had previously read it on the other machine... but thanks for your suggestions just the same....

i am thinking of partitioning my massive 300 gig hard drive and installing some other OS's anyway like linux and making it a dual boot box.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
this is the first PC i've owned that could play the game farcry with so i have been blowing up some vehicles and shooting guys from the remote islands with the sniper rifle....a bit... heh heh heh in my spare time..

after i down loaded all the freakin patches though, it would no longer run
so i deleted it ALL and have to start all over again...

i had altered the dev mode file so i could cheat and add all weapons and ammo=999 and god mode ect.so i could last long enough to enjoy the game... but even with this much faster PC it still crashes...(intense graphics) PFFFF what a joke. oh well plenty else to do....
