WTH is this---
I go to pickup my order at my favorite Chineese Take Out tonight. Very hard working people own it, and even their young children work there on weekends. A couple of weeks ago they hired a few different High School kids to take orders. Tonight i go in and there's a quart egg drop soup container sittin next to the register with TIPS written on it. Ya gotta be kiddin me, i'm gonna tip them to take my phone order and take my $. There was some dollar bills in it, maybe a plant, but you'd have to be crazy to tip for service like that.

Wow, that's some serious grumppage
It's not like they make all that money to begin with. Sweating away over a rocketship engine hot wok burner for hours on end to ensure you're beef is cooked just right...for what...7-9 bucks an entree?
What follows is a true story, just happened a few months ago.
I was picking up a large order of Chinese take out from the joint on Main in North Tiverton. Where they have a very large plastic tip jar on the counter next to the register.
As I'm walking out the door with a bag in each hand I hear a bit of a ruckus inside, then right behind me bolts a young guy...cradeling the TIP JAR!
He nearly bumped into me from behind, but managed to sneak around and started to dash across the parking lot.
Right about this time I'm thinking to myself if it's worth dropping the bags and doing my best Mike Singletary
When suddenly, the tip jar remembered it was previously bolted to the counter and no longer had a a bottom
Like a blooming flower, it explodes sending change up and across the entire parking lot
The woman comes out and I ask if they called the police...no, she says...this third time happen this year!

Wasn't grumpin about the family, they deserve every penny they make. I'm sure it was the new upper middle class high school kids idea. It started right after they started working there.

I never tip for take out or coffee, I do tip the pizza delivery person
remember that waiters and waitresses work for a wage lower than minimum
wage and there tips are supossed to make up for the difference, plus you tip
for the service you recieve while being served.

Have you ever noticed that when you don't tip @ DD or any other coffee shops they act like your some kind of ******* ! I do believe that TIPS mean to insure promptness and service..... It takes 4-ever and a day at most places and the coffee usually sux ! Although I do believe in tipping your server well @ restraunts (depending on service) because they only make 2.89/ hr! That does not include take out....

Tipping is always optional, based on service. It can range from 0% for rude or little service on up to whatever you feel is fair for the service you get.
When your in a diner, or even dunkin donuts or anywhere, at 3am or whatever for example, and ya know the person waiting on you is bustin their hump to make a livin for their family, then you can always leave a gift which is more, and for a different reason than a tip.
just my 2 cts.

So Spence, do you tip at McDonalds? I doubt it, I do not tip at D&D but if it is raining or the middle of winter I tip the guy that pumps my gas. You tip for service recieved, not just cause they are standing there answering a phone if thats the case the FAA, Homeland Security, and just about every bank and cingular company owe me some serious coin.

Well, I don't eat at McDonalds
But I believe all McDonalds workers receive at least minimum wage, and are not tipped positions...so it may be a bit odd to slip a GW over the counter to my pimple faced clerk
I don't typically tip for take out, although there are execeptions to that...but tipping for "service" alone is a relative matter indeed. Often the proper tip is higher than the relative service received.

I don't tip for take out anything. People get paid to cook and bag the food. I do tip $1 or 2 for buffet table clearing folks. As far as the kids feeling they are underpaid, at least they have a job! Too many young people feel they should make executive pay when they can't even make change without a calculator.

Ok so here is my opinion.... I have been in both situations! I have worked @ a coffee shop and been a waitress! In the coffee shop industry I feel as though they are looking for a handout because they feel they can....(BullSh*t) but they still milk it! The restraunt buisness well if your server works for their tip then they deserve it I will tip extra (if they do their job) Although I have also left a penny on the table in reguards to YOU SU** and should find another line of work!

Every time I go to DD and ask for a LIGHT coffee, I end up getting an ICED coffee.
I then say, "no, I wanted a light." and have them make the coffee properly.
Do they understand English ?
