Wow, sad news. Thanks for the notice John. I had the pleasure of talking with him many times and once at the MSBA show in Braintree at the old Armory I casually asked him if I could buy a couple of his plugs. He told me "no,but come out to the jeep with me for a second". We got out there and in the back he had boxes of his homemade plugs and he reached in and handed me a bunch and said, "here try these, they work for me pretty well".
I never got a jointed giant swimmer of his and was hoping he would come around and be able to make a few more. Now he is with all the other old guard on a new beach, God rest his soul.

Why even try.........

He will be missed. I hate to see another member of the "old guard" pass on. He was one of the first people I had the pleasure of meeting on the beach. He was a great surfcaster and a real character. This has been a bad year for losing good guys. I just heard this past week big Tom passed as well as Gerry dont know the last names though... Gerry drove a white dodge last I knew and drank Ballentine. I'm sorry I didn't get to know them as well as George, who I spent many a night fishing the back with. I have one of those monster pikies, and it is a backbreaker to cast for any length of time! Rest In Peace George, God Bless You!

That's sad news, he was an interesting guy. He told me some great fishing stories out there on the beach.
Maybe people will think its a little bit morbid, but every time I saw him out there over the last few years I'd buy a few plugs out of his truck, figuring one day soon he'd never be back. I probably have 15 of them. I remember running into him airing up on the way off the beach in early October 2005. I said, "See you next year, George" and his reply was "Maybe, but maybe not."
You can throw those pencil poppers a country mile....I've caught some nice bass on them.
Anybody who doesn't know who George is, have a look at some of the old photos on the wall in Nelson's in Provincetown if you ever get up there. You'll see him with some fish that will make your eyes pop out.

I met him by pure accident one afternoon at Race Point and fished with him for a few hours. The blues were in and there were several of us hooking up on most casts. He was right there at the waters edge with us. That's sad to hear. I salute him and wish him a pleasant journey.

Funny, the last couple of days, George has occupied my thoughts some. I knew that he had been ill. I remember George from my earliest days fishing. He dug worms at Cold Storage Beach because the flats warden in P-town kept throwing him out. I'd walk down at lowtide and his old Wagoneer would be there, as reliably as the tide itself. We'd chit-chat. I thought he was pretty cool for an older guy (in reality, I'm probably older now than he was then). I never knew that he made plugs until much later, even after I'd bought some in Nelson's when it was upstairs across the lot. They worked. Good to have met ya George, I'll catch up later.

The last time I was talking to George he was saying he needed one more year on the beach and it would make 60 years fishing the beach, sorry to hear of his passing. Tight lines forever George!

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.

Truly sad news. He never made it up here this past season, but came up about 3 or 4 times the year before. Mikey, aka "Tuna", would let him stay over at his cottages in Truro, but I think George preferred to still sleep in the back of his buggy, even at his age.(unless of course their was free food to be had, then he would drive miles!).
Be at rest George, and watch over the beaches and ocean for us.
