Abrasion Resistance -"The Brick Test"

Here we go. I rubbed dry line on an angle over a dry brick, trying to not rub on the sharp edge so as to test the abbrasion resistance and not the cutting resistance. I tried each line 3 to 4 times to try to get an average. When I had a number significantly inconsistent with the other results I disregarded that attempt. (For example, the Stren Braid was inconclusive b/c on 3 tests it averaged 3 scrapes and on 2 other rubs it averaged 30 rubs- these widespread results were significantly different than the results on the other lines).

Only a small area ofl line "1-2 inches" was consistently rubbed/scrapped. Soon, I'll be posting the results for some other tests and I plan to wet the line on at least one test. In summary, I found the monos to be significantly more abbrasion resistant than the braids, but I'll let you make your own conclusions:

Very interesting about fireline. I was sure it had better abrasion resistance than braid. Wrong again. I'm curious how big game compares to back country in the same lb test. Thanks for doing this.

No problem. I don't think these results are totally conclusive, but there will be more coming. At a minimum, I think we can start to make reasonable generalzations.

I just go with the old fashioned pull test. I will make up a section of whatever I am interested in testing (knots, swivels, & material being used) and pull. One end has a scale, the other is attatched to a screw driver or nail... I think whichever line breaks first/last will reflect how it 's going to act when it's chaffed.


There are too many variables when it comes down to scraping line & getting any serious results.

The Fireline results are very surprising. Tell me, was it a new spool of fireline bought within the past year?

I ask this because I had stocked up on fireline about 6 years ago and had great results with that old stock. However, on a new spool I bought last year, I was shocked by how easily it popped.

I'm wondering if there is a quality control problem. I maybe a broken record on this point, but hey, gotta have a bee in your bonnet about something...

I'm certain all lines were new, not used.

Keep in mind, I don't claim to be a scientist here, but rather had the urge to do a few tests and make some generalzations that evolved out of a conversation I had about mono vs. braid with my fishing partner.

I'll be performing some more tests in the near future, but these are time consuming. If you want certain lines tested,, fell free to cut off some 10' sections and mail them to me (you can PM me for my address) and I'll test it for you.

Like I said more tests to come.

Thanks for the input fcap60, looking forward to future tests. Maybe I will contact the companies and ask them how they expect their lines to perform under this kind of test...consumer reports, look out...here comes S-B.com....
