Baitrunner reel Prob
One of my shimano 6500 baitrunners messed up this week.
It won't snap back to strike from run.
I opened it to find 2 pounds of parts in a 1 pound box.
Anyone have any experience with these things???

Pulled out my schematic.....I'd say....
Right under the cover is a spring...."Baitrunner Clicker Spring".....which is attached to the "clutch plate assembly"....that's all those funny looking plates and levers you'll see.
Somehow, I don't think this is the problem, but it worth checking to make sure it looks okay and looks like it is where it belongs.
In that area, but towrds the bottom, there is also a "Clutch Pawl Spring", but short of you having the schematic, couldn't possibly explain where it is.
If it's not one of those two things, then it's much deeper, such as the "Baitrunner Pawl Spring" or the "Baitrunner Guide".....and at that point, it's so deep....take it somewhere that knows what they are doing.....otherwide you'll have a lot of spare parts lying on your bench....and a totally non-functional reel....
Unless Arby chimes in on this....I contacted him and hopefully he'll be by with his 2 cents in awhile......

Van - you also may want to give it to Paul at the meeting next week if you can't get it fixed...

Paul, The Reel Man. He's a member, tall fellow, does reel repair for a lot of the local shops & the club. I forget his last name but if you saw him, you'd recognize him...

Hi Van,
I can clean it out and lube it up to be like new but when there's 2 pounds of parts in a one pound box it's time to seek out professional help. When you say it won't strike back are you talking about the bail? Or, are you talking about the Baitrunner feature not snapping back from free run mode? I hope Paul is able to help you out. I have 2 6500's and they are my go to Chunking Reel.

Arby:
Correct, it will not snap back out of free spool to strike when I crank the handle. I looked a bit deeper last night and found that there are two small posts on the main gear that hit a dog and trip the baitrunner handle back to normal. It looks like the gear may may be worn and the posts pass under the dog instead of hitting it. Maybe a new drive gear will fix the prob. But again there are so many parts and springs in there, if I open it more it may "explode".
I have a coouple of spares so its not critical right now.
Thanks for the input all..
V

Van - how old is the reel and does it look used and abused?

John:
Oh, its used alright..
It is a quite a few years old, but maintained well. I have others the same vintage and they still work fine.
The parts inside are very clean, no rust, no salt, nada.
I am actually surprised.
But maybe the main gear is the problem., I think it is aluminum which will wear quicker than the brass gears around it.
It could wear enough to still work, but lose the tolerance to get that little post to trip the baitrunner.

Drop it off at Fore River B+T. Just saw Paul the repair guy there yesterday. I forget the name also. Dropping off tomorrow during ladies day would be a bonus !
