water temps finally

I have been patiently watching the water temps for a month now, waiting for them to start to rise. It was almost to the point that I thought the thermometers they were using were broken or stuck. seemed like 37 degrees was all there was give or take a tenth of a degree. I checked today and the temp is finally on the rise. In the past few years I know the bass are here when the temp at buzzards bay tower hits 50 degrees. There are other spots in my area where you may find keeper size bass as early as Easter.. sometimes. But I use that magical 50 degree mark as my starting gun.
Granted I have caught bass with herring with lower water temps. What I am talking about is just plugging or chunking from shore.

Does anyone else have a magic number or indicator.

When gas prices are $3.00 a gallon is a good indictator.

Silly Goose

I start the 2nd to 3rd week in may when I know there are keepers in the herring run up north here, I try to get all my spring chores done first, So I have to say May 15th water temp has nothing to do with it because it is 30 miles up river.

buzzard's bay temps

Woods Hole is currently reporting 39 degrees. If 50 is your mark, you're still looking at mid-May for that. In the mean time I'll be focusing on freshwater for trout, smallies, and shad (mid April).

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

Just because they can. You can count on the "up" part, not so sure about the "down." Exxon Mobil and our elected officials need to ensure that profits don't dip below $20 billion a quarter...

I go by dates more than anything. march 21 , dinks at the wall , first weened in April , over to the bars , 3rd week in april herring livelining (not this year of course) 3rd week in may , canal. That's not nescessarily when the fish show , just traditional dates for me and my friends to take interest in a given area.
