finally caught a fish

well it was a dog fish but it was the first good fish since going out
these last couple of weeks i also had a good one on drifting whole herring with 2 hooks reel lit up zzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!woke me right up grabbed pole set hook reeling it in my dream was gone it ate my two hooks just my weight and two empty lines were there no hooks dont know what i had but it was good hit got me all fired up to go again tommorro how can i prevent line from being eaten what do you think i did wrong i was fishing in 100ft water off plymouth my guess it was another dog fish and i gave him to much slack ????? when your chunking does weight go on the bottom or hook on the bottom of your line??and if i put leader on how do you set up line properly thanks

I would try a fish finder. Basically a slider for your weight. It allows for the bait to be picked up without the fish feeling the weight. Also, if you suspect dog fish or Blues in the area, a wire leader wouldn't hurt.
