Humminbird 787c2i vs. Garmin 440s

Does anyone have either of these units and willing to provide feedback, pros/cons? Or possibly suggest another comparable product?

Right now I'm leaning towards the Humminbird, but I'm curious about the detail in the preloaded charts. Is it necessary to purchase the Navionics/Hotmaps charts?

Also, can anyone recommend a local dealer (SE Mass). I'd prefer to buy from someone local rather than the internet, but as far as I can see, none of the local stores can compete with the internet prices. I'm going to purchase within the next week.

I'd like to keep it around $600. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

My goal in life is to be the kind of man my dog thinks I am.

I have the 787 and I love it, I am sure both are quality units and it comes down to style you like more...I like the Navionics gold chart better than the Garmin but again its personal preference. I have had no problems at all with my humminbird unit , the screen is sharp and easily viewable even in bright sun, I love my 787. I also like the humminbird mount better its no where near as bulky and that quick release is nice.

#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& and myself will probably be the biggest supporters for the 787... ill echo everything above, and the people that have been on my boat seem to think its a really great unit as well. And now with the side imaging, (which i don't have) I think its a step or two in front of the comparable units....

Also, my GPS antenna failed over the winter and I had to send it back.
It took 1 week turnaround with no questions asked.... Customer service was excellent... keep in mind, I NEVER have a good customer service experience, cars, boats, houses.... Ive tried the whole you get more bees with honey thing, and always seem to be taken for a ride or just blown off. So for me to compliment a customer service dept, thats pretty big.

Garmin 440S

I recently bought the Garmin 440S through the internet (www.anchorexpress.com). The price was over $100 less than any local store. So far I really like the unit. The display has great resolution and it is bright enough to see in direct sunlight. The buttons are easy to navigate and the menu's are laid out well. I did not get the g2 chip, but the pre-loaded charts seem to be pretty good for Boston Harbor.
