I realize this is last minute, but if you can make this meeting, please do.
=============
IMPORTANT: READ....
RIDEM and RIDOT have been going forward with plans to construct a public fishing
pier and state park at the site of the old Jamestown Bridge. This new facility
would be called the Plum Point Fishing Pier State Park and would be the first of
it's kind for Rhode Island citizens.
This facility would provide access to Narragansett Bay for shorebound anglers,
handicapped, and regular citizens who could stroll the pier with their children
on a Sunday afternoon.
NEIGHBORS OPPOSE PIER/PARK
As expected, local residents of the Plum Point area do NOT want to see this
happen. We heard that a meeting was held last week and they vowed to fight to
stop the pier. The North Kingstown Town Council president was present and he
also reportedly vowed to fight it, and said he would get it on the next Town
Council agenda.
The agenda has been altered and it will be heard. The proposal would be to get
the town council to pass a resolution to send to the Legislature saying that
North Kingstown opposes this park.
EVEN IF YOU NEVER FISH FROM SHORE, YOU NEED TO SUPPORT THIS PUBLIC ACCESS
OPPORTUNITY
Over the years, there have only been a few times when recreational anglers have
been urged to support an important issue. THIS IS ONE OF THEM!
Rhode Island calls itself the Ocean State, yet, unlike all other states along
the coast, public access to the shore is extremely limited. We're probably the
only state on the coast without a public pier like this.
The pier design committee went out of its way to incorporate a way to satisfy
EVERY fear or objection of the neighborhood association. This pier would not
bother neighborhood residents, other than they simply don't want anyone else
using "their" bay.
