My wife said that they released a name of Paul Martin, from Longmeadow, Mass. That name rings a bell but I'm not sure if it is from fishing or something else

T&P to this anglers friends and family.

Unhappy Surfcaster Drowns

Just reported on the 11:00 news.

Surfcaster Paul Martin of Longmeadow, MA drowned at Deep Hole/Carpenters Bar this evening. A fellow surfcaster saw/heard him in distress and called for help. It took the coast guard/search and rescue approximately an hour and a half to recover the body located several feet off shore and around 100 yards from where he was last seen.

Not the best spot to fish alone especially if you are unfamiliar with the area.

Be careful out there!

I remember once wading out at Deep Hole and getting my feet all tangled in a bunch of fishing line under water that just about dunked me.

What a shame. My thoughts for his family.

Verrrry sad, and unfortunate!

My family's thoughts and prayers will go out to him and his.
We can, ALL, never be too careful. got baptized a coupla times meself this year through mnissteps and rogue waveage.

No Trophy is worth our lives and how that loss would effect our loved ones. I always try to have a viable exit stategy, and try not to position myself so precariously that if and when something freaky does happen me noggin doesn't get bashed in, or there isn't a safe place to swim to.

Deep hole is no bargain under the wrong conditions, seems docile and can be somewhat hypnotic..........................

Rest in Peace, Paul, and God's Speed for you and His Peace and Comfort for your family.

I was thinking about this, many say that hazard ave and beavertail are so dangerous, but I always feel safer at those places over places like deep hole- deep wading on bowling ball sized rocks with a sweeping current can be sketchy if you are not careful.

Agreed, Nebe.............

Never felt that Hazard and The Tail are nearly as dangerous as say working the mouth of the Narrow and DH. What's illusive about DH and Carpenter's is that both spots present themselves as doable and more docile than they actually are.

In other words, at first glance they appear to be "easy", whereas with names like Hazard and the very nature of the rocks at The Tail your guard and senses are already "UP", so to speak. It's the sneaky rip, rogue wave, hidden pocket/bowl while wading that often places us in harm's way.

We can NEVER take too many precautions and it doesn't hurt to feesh with a partner, or in lieu of a partner in places like the aforementioned spots a PFD is a MUST when going solo. Just my thoughts................

For those of us that do not wade all that often, could some one shed a little light how this occurs and what you do to minimize the risks. Is it more often than not the inability to stand up once dunked? Now I am not a complete newbie, wader belts, avoid going solo, knowing hte area, etc., but as I expand my horizons from the rock points of the Northshore I would like to tap into the experience of those that have been there and done that.
Just a thought. You might want to start a new thread so that we can just focus on the loss here. My concern is that we might assume that he was doing something wrong when that might not be at all true. Seems like almost every year someone dies doing what we do. Sobering thought... again condolences. Bad things happen to good people and bad things usually happen fast when you do what we do.

Despite what has been said above, it is not really a dangerous place to fish. There is no real "drop off ", and the currents are not that strong where you can get "swept" away (excluding hurricane surf). While the footing is tricky, you can usually just get back up if you take a spill. I am guessing there was some physical issue (heart attack, etc) involved, unless he really pushed the wading envelope and tried to swim to some fish
