FISH ID

I think this is a pilot fish but I am not positive as most pilot fish have some bars. What do you think it is?

I sent it in to our local expert. (Dr. Greg Skomal) I just got a reply back...

This is a blue runner (Caranx crysos), one of the jacks. This species is around in the summer and fall, but not in high numbers. Its close relative is the Crevalle jack (Caranx hippos). Thanks for sharing the photo and let me know if you have any other questions.

Tight lines,

Greg

They look more like a darker, stubbier AJ Mike, and have a dark band on the eye; caught one trolling in the Abacos before.

I guess we have to defer to Dr. Greg, but damn if it doesn't look too yellow to be a blue runner...

From "Fishes of the Gulf of Maine" - common nickname for blue runner is Yellow Jack.

Coloration is often a tough way to tell fish species apart. I caught a banded rudderfish the other day that had zero stripes, just a light band through the eye. Put a hook in its back and tried live-lining it to bluefish, and when I brought it back in it had stripes like a zebra. Amazing how they can do that.

Seems to be a banner year for these "occasional late-summer visitors."
