Toggin'

Went Toggin' with Clammer Fri am. The air temp was in the low 20's and the bay was choppy, making for a chilly ride south of the bridges. We anchored up in about 60' and got consistent action right away. We ended up with 12 keepers to 9#'s and a bunch of throw backs. Dress warm.....

Pardon me, Cap, but in epicurean circles it's known as Drunken Blackfish Stew...

Wait a minute, that reminds me of a story (uh oh, here we go )

Back in the day when men were men and the fish were afraid and I was just a mere slip of a lad, a group of commercial fishermen from the trap company just down the wharf had just come back from a trip and were enjoying a few bottles of 'Gansett at the Acorn Inn just at the bottom of our street on Thames. If memory serves this is in the late '50's, maybe early '60's -

Our next door neighbor walks in with a bucket of blackfish he'd just caught out of his skiff and sits next to them and asks the bartender if he'd like some fish.

The trap fishermen apparently began to make a few comments about the fish, the fisherman and finally his parent's marital status at the time of his birth followed by an assessment of his sexual preference.

After the laughter dies down and the trap men return to their beers, the blackfisher quietly gets up, walks over behind the loudest of the bunch, reaches into his pail and takes out a 12# tog, hauls off and and proceeds to absolutely wail the guy with it.

Knocked the guy clear off the stool and put him out cold as a codfish on the floor

That story is true - the bar is still there, although they now serve Cosmos to young things, and both combatants are still alive and love the story even more than I do. It's a neighborhood legend in fact.

Ahh, the good old days.....

Hey Mike, you're gonna give away all your blackfish spots -

All anybody has to do is keep a watch out for an Eastern rigged quahog skiff with some crazy old guy hanging from the boom
